2010 Festival

The second Triple C Corsham festival took place over the weekend of 28 - 30 May 2010.  The committee had decorated the hall with flags and bunting and a fabulous balloon arch across the stage.  Once again we were expecting guests and friends from across the country in caravans tents and also making use of local B&Bs.  Stuart had the disco up and running from 3.30 but as it was a glorious sunny day only  a few turned up to dance, most were enjoying the sunshine, no doubt with a cold drink in hand!!.

The first act of the weekend was Capricorn, this 4-piece band are regular favourites at Corsham Triple C monthly dances and they did not let us down tonight.  John and the 2 Mikes were joined by Graham on lead guitar tonight as Pat was unable to attend, but that made no difference to the high quality of their performance.  With songs such as Amigo, Tina Louise and Apartment #9, they treated us to a wide variety of fabulous country songs that are not heard very often these days.  All thoroughly danceable and greatly appreciated by the guests.  The evening was a great opener for the weekend and a great deal of dancing was done from start to finish.

Saturday morning brought a change in the weather with heavy rain outside.  Inside, however, was fine and with breakfast bacon butties from Wishbone’s Chuckwagon, everyone was keen to get started.  The first of the dance workshops was from Terry & Caroline French with a partner dance called Red Wine to a track of music Getting You Home by a new country artist, Chris Young.  Ann Williams followed shortly after with a line dance Adios My Darling to  a new version of an old song, Vaya Con Dios by Heather Myles.  In addition to the dance instruction sessions there was ample time and opportunity for social dancing with Stuart providing the tunes on the disco.

In the afternoon session Ann was back on first with husband Ron for their first partner dance teach for the weekend.  This was a new dance choreographed by Ann herself called Shine, to a piece of music Shine On by another relatively new artist Jeff Carson.  Terry had the next session with a line dance called Askin’ Questions to a track of the same name by Brady Seals.  Again there was more social dancing with Stuart on the disco and finally a recap session covering all of the dances taught during the day before breaking up for  tea and preparations for the evening entertainment.

For Saturday night’s entertainment we had the one and only Dave Sheriff.  As expected there was some banter from Stuart in the build up to his introduction, all taken in good humour by Dave.  Dave played a mixed set of country classics and some of his own compositions including Benidorm Boogie and Red Hot Salsa.  Problems with his head mic gave Dave some challenges in the instrument quick changes which are a key feature of his performance but he dealt with the restrictions like the professional he is.  After 3 great sets, Dave finished the evening off with his classic hit Best Of Friends. After a short session from Stuart on the disco it was time again to retire to bed.

On Sunday morning the dance instruction continued. Terry taught a line dance called Mexican Sway to track by Willie Nelson and Carlos Santana entitled They All Went to Mexico.  This was followed by another partner dance from Ron and Ann.  Rather than teach another new dance Ann had decided to revive one of her dances from a few years ago called Forgetting.  The music for this is a lovely track be Lee Ann Womack called I Keep Forgetting.

In the afternoon there was a complete run through of all of the dances taught throughout the weekend as well as lots of time for social dancing to music from Stu on the disco, and the wrap up at about 4.30 to get ready for the evening dance.

Sunday night’s band was another Triple C favourite, Kalibre.  Bobby Reed on vocals and acoustic guitar with Bob Dixon on pedal steel guitar.  These guys are just fantastic, playing a wide range of fabulous country music.  There were the usual Kalibre classic versions of songs from Merle Haggard like If We’re Not Back In Love By Monday and Working Man’s Blues, together with other favourites like The Fireman, and One More Last Chance.  But tonight we were also treated to some brand new songs in the Kalibre repertoire, including the recent Billy Currington hit People Are Crazy and an absolutely blistering version of Dangerous Curves by The Notorious Cherry Bombs.  The guys were on absolute top form tonight and seemed to be really enjoying themselves, we all certainly did, this was Kalibre at their best.  They provided a fantastic finale to the weekend and had to do 3 encores before they were allowed to leave the stage.  Thanks guys!!
